Garo (ISO 639-3 code: grt)

Garo is a non-scheduled language enlisted in the Indian Constitution. It belongs to the Tibeto-Burman family. Garo is a Sino-Tibetan language spoken in India, in the Garo hills districts of Meghalaya, some parts of Assam, and in small pockets of Tripura. Garo has been given the status of an associate official language (the main official language being English) in the five Garo Hills districts of Meghalaya, under the Meghalaya State Language Act, 2005. The total population of the Garos is 1145323 (as per 2011 Census).

The language is also used as the medium of instruction at the elementary level in Government schools of Garo Hills.
