Hindi is one of the major Scheduled Languages of India. It belongs to the Indo-Aryan Family. It is also known as Hindui, Hindavi, Hindustani. The Script of Hindi is Devanagari. It is the preferred official language of India. It is spoken in Northern, Eastern, Western and Central parts of India, which is popularly known as the Hindi Belt. Hindi is the first official Language of the ‘Hindi Belt’ (Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Chhatisgarh, Chandigarh and Delhi). Hindi is the lingua franca of India. Hindi also serves as a major medium of Education, being the first language of the Hindi belt and as the second language in the rest of India. Hindi has several varieties in India (Punjabi-Hindi, Hyderabadi-Hindi, Marathi-Hindi, Shilangi-Hindi, etc.) and across the globe (Fiji, Surnami, Netali, Tajiki Hindi etc.,). The total number of speakers of Hindi (including dialects of Hindi) are 52,83,47,193. About 32,22,30,097 persons returned to Hindi as their mother tongue in the 2011 Census.
