Chokri

Chokri indicates the name of the community as well as the language. The Chokri community is also called Chakru or Chakhesang. The name Chakhesang is an amalgamation of the three major sub-tribe, namely Cha-Khe-Sang. The three syllables represent Chokri, Kheza, and Sangtam, respectively. Chokri is one of the three languages spoken by the Chakhesang Naga. Chokri belongs to the Tibeto-Burman language group. It was estimated that there were 91,216 Chokri native speakers as per the 2011 census record. The major population of this community lives in the Phek District of Nagaland. The village called Cheswezumi in Nagaland is where Chokri has the largest population. Some Chokri speakers reside in the Senapati district of Manipur bordering Nagaland.
