भूमिज

भूमिज एक ऑस्ट्रोएशियाटिक भाषा है, जो उत्तरी मुंडा या खेरवाड़ियन शाखा से संबंधित है। यह मुख्य रूप से झारखंड, ओडिशा और पश्चिम बंगाल में रहने वाले भूमिज समुदाय द्वारा बोली जाती है। झारखंड में यह भाषा विशेष रूप से सिंहभूम क्षेत्र से जुड़ी हुई है। भूमिज का संबंध मुंडारी तथा अन्य खेरवाड़ियन मुंडा भाषाओं से निकटता से है, हालांकि भाषाविदों के बीच इसे एक स्वतंत्र भाषा अथवा मुंडारी से निकटता से संबंधित एक भाषिक रूप मानने को लेकर विभिन्न मत पाए जाते हैं। भारत की 2011 की जनगणना के अनुसार, 27,506 लोगों ने भूमिज को अपनी मातृभाषा के रूप में दर्ज किया था। यह संख्या भूमिज समुदाय की कुल जनसंख्या की तुलना में काफी कम है, जो कुछ भूमिज समुदायों में प्रमुख क्षेत्रीय भाषाओं की ओर हो रहे महत्वपूर्ण भाषा-परिवर्तन (Language Shift) को दर्शाती है।

ऐतिहासिक रूप से भूमिज मुख्यतः एक मौखिक भाषा रही है और विभिन्न क्षेत्रों तथा संदर्भों में इसे ओड़िया, बंगाली, देवनागरी और रोमन (Latin) लिपियों में लिखा गया है। भूमिज भाषा को लिखने के लिए ओल ओनल लिपि का विकास महेंद्र नाथ सरदार द्वारा 1981 से 1992 के बीच किया गया था। इसे भूमिज लिपि या भूमिज ओनल के नाम से भी जाना जाता है और बाद में इसका उपयोग भूमिज की शैक्षिक तथा मुद्रित सामग्री में किया गया है। ओल ओनल लिपि का विकास और उसका यूनिकोड में समावेशन भाषा के लिखित स्वरूप को सुदृढ़ करने की दिशा में महत्वपूर्ण कदम हैं। भूमिज भाषा अपने वक्ताओं की सांस्कृतिक पहचान, मौखिक परंपराओं और भाषाई विरासत से गहराई से जुड़ी हुई है। हालांकि, भूमिज समुदाय की कुल जनसंख्या की तुलना में मातृभाषा के रूप में भूमिज बोलने वालों की अपेक्षाकृत कम संख्या भाषा-परिवर्तन की स्थिति को दर्शाती है। इसलिए भाषा के संरक्षण और भविष्य की पीढ़ियों तक इसके हस्तांतरण के लिए भाषा का दस्तावेजीकरण, संरक्षण और पुनर्जीवन अत्यंत आवश्यक है।

भूमिज को झारखंड में आधिकारिक मान्यता भी प्राप्त है। जनवरी 2019 में झारखंड सरकार ने भूमिज को राज्य की दूसरी राजभाषा के रूप में अधिसूचित किया। यह मान्यता झारखंड में भूमिज भाषा की दृश्यता, उपयोग और संवर्धन के लिए महत्वपूर्ण है तथा राज्य की समृद्ध भाषाई विविधता को भी दर्शाती है।

Bhumij

Bhumij is an Austroasiatic language of the North Munda, or Kherwarian, branch. It is spoken primarily by the Bhumij community in Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal, with smaller speaker populations reported in other parts of eastern India. Within Jharkhand, the language is particularly associated with the Singhbhum region. Bhumij is closely related to Mundari and other Kherwarian Munda languages, although scholars differ in their treatment of Bhumij as either a distinct language or a variety closely related to Mundari. According to the 2011 Census of India, 27,506 people reported Bhumij as their mother tongue. This figure is considerably smaller than the overall Bhumij population, reflecting substantial language shift toward dominant regional languages in some Bhumij communities.

Historically, Bhumij was primarily an oral language and was written using scripts such as Odia, Bengali, Devanagari, and Latin in different regions and contexts. The Ol Onal script was developed by Mahendra Nath Sardar between 1981 and 1992 specifically for writing Bhumij. It is also known as Bhumij Lipi or Bhumij Onal and has subsequently been used in Bhumij educational and printed materials. The development and Unicode encoding of Ol Onal represent important steps toward strengthening the written representation of the language. Bhumij is closely associated with the cultural identity, oral traditions, and linguistic heritage of its speakers. However, the relatively small number of mother-tongue speakers compared with the wider Bhumij population indicates significant language shift, making documentation, preservation, and revitalization important for safeguarding the language.

Bhumij also has official recognition in Jharkhand. In January 2019, the Jharkhand government notified Bhumij as a second state language (second Rajbhasha) of the state. This recognition is significant for the visibility and promotion of the language within Jharkhand and reflects the linguistic diversity of the state.
