Konkani belongs to the Southern Indo-Aryan language group under Indo-Aryan languages. The communities are the Konkani people primarily residing along the western coastal region (Konkan) of the Indian state of Goa. It is also spoken by a fairly large population in other Indian states such as Karnataka, Maharashtra and in some parts of Kerala, Gujarat and other union territories like Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. The population is estimated around 22,56,502 as per 2011 Census. Konkani, an official language of the state of Goa, is one of the 22 Scheduled languages mentioned in the 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution.
