Dimasa
The Dimasa community is an ethnolinguistic community. The name Dimasa is a combination of three words Di-ma-sa , meaning sons of big waters, referring to the Brahmaputra River known as Dilao in Dimasa. This community is fairly homogeneous and exclusive, with members required to be drawn from separate clans of both the parents. Dimasa belongs to the Tibeto-Burman language family. As per the 2011 census, Dimasa has a population of 137184. Dimasa communities are settling in Assam, Nagaland and Manipur states in the Northeastern part of India. Dimasa people mainly settle in present-day Dima Hasao District (Old name North Cachar Hills) of Assam. They also have a sizeable population in Cachar, Karbi Anglong, Nowgong, Hailakandi and Karimganj Districts of the Assam state and the Dimapur and Jiribam regions of Nagaland and Manipur states.
