Karbi belongs to the Tibeto-Burman languages of the Sino-Tibetan family. The community is indigenous to one of the major ethnic tribes in Northeast India, mainly residing in Karbi Anglong District and West Karbi Anglong District of the Indian State of Assam. It is also spoken in other Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland. The population, according to census 2011, is estimated around 5,28,503. The autonym of the language is Arleng (meaning “man” in the Karbi language).
