Bhunjia (ISO-639-3 code: bhu)

The Bhunjia tribes are of two varieties namely Chukutia Bhunjia and Chinda Bhunjia. The term ‘Bhunjia’ means growing out of land or origin from the earth.

Bhunjia is an ethnic tribe in India found mainly in the states of Odisha and Chhattisgarh. According to the natives, Bhunjia means ‘growing out of land’ or ‘origin from the earth’. Bhunjia is the name of both language and community that belong to the Indo-Aryan language family. Their population is around 6,790 (Eberhard, 2003) and the status of the language is 6b i.e., threatened (Eberhard, 2003). Their script is Devanagari script and are Hindu by religion. The main income source of income of this tribe is agriculture. The ISO code for this language is iso6293 code: bhu and glottocode is bhun1242.
