Malto

Malto (Ethnologue ISO 639-3: mjt)

Malto (Ethnologue ISO 639-3: mjt)

Malto, also known as Sauria Paharia, is an endangered Northern Dravidian language spoken by over 1,50,000 indigenous people primarily living in the Rajmahal Hills of Jharkhand’s Santhal Pargana region (Sahibganj, Pakur, Godda, and Dumka). It is a rare linguistic relative of the Kurukh language, structurally featuring a 7-vowel system, retroflex consonants, and heavy vocabulary influences from nearby Indo-Aryan languages.

Because Malto lacks a unique native script, its speakers use the Devanagari, Bengali, and Latin alphabets for reading and writing. Today, the language faces severe survival pressures as younger generations increasingly shift toward economically dominant languages like Hindi, Bengali, and Santali.
