हल्बी (Ethnologue ISO 639-3: hlb)

Halbi (Ethnologue ISO 639-3: hlb)

Halbi is an important Eastern Indo-Aryan language spoken primarily in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, particularly in southern parts of the state. It is also spoken in neighboring areas of Odisha, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh, reflecting the close historical and cultural connections among communities across this region. Linguistically, Halbi is notable for its transitional character, with strong influences from Odia and Marathi, as well as contact with Chhattisgarhi, Hindi, Gondi, and other regional languages. As a result of this long-standing multilingual environment, Halbi has developed distinctive features in its vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammatical usage. Different regional varieties may also show varying degrees of influence from the languages spoken around them.

Halbi is also an important part of the social and cultural life of Bastar. It has traditionally been used for communication among communities living in this multilingual region and has served as an important link language in everyday social interaction. The language is closely connected with the oral traditions and cultural practices of the region, including folk songs, stories, traditional narratives, customs, and local knowledge. These oral forms have helped pass cultural traditions and community knowledge from one generation to another. Halbi is written in both Devanagari and Odia scripts, depending on the region and writing context. The 2011 Census of India lists Halabi among the mother tongues recorded in Chhattisgarh, highlighting its continuing presence within the state's linguistic diversity. Thus, Halbi represents not only an important means of communication but also a significant part of the linguistic and cultural heritage of Bastar and central India.
