Spiti (ISO-639-3 code: spt)

Spiti is one of the Lahuli-Spiti languages belonging to the Tibetic branch of Sino-Tibetan language family. It is spoken in mountain valley of Himalayas, in the Lahul and Spiti region of Himachal Pradesh, India. The name ‘Spiti’ means ‘The middle land’ and refers to land between Tibet and India. According to the Census of India, 2001, the Spiti population is recorded to be 11,000. Although used as a first language within the community, Spiti is considered to be endangered because of its status as an unrecognized community language without a written tradition.
